Set atop of Bondi’s sandstone cliff, the dwelling has amplified exposure to the elements, especially saltwater and wind. The facade of the existing house was ageing rapidly and the clients were seeking a makeover that would stand the test of time and environmental conditions. Positioned uniquely with views to the ocean from both front and back of the dwelling, the design directive was all about opening the house to its views. Walling, stairs and other obstructions were further reduced to gain maximum internal width on living and bedroom levels. Due to the elongated nature of the dwelling and the block of land, cuts in roof and upper floor-plate bring additional, controllable natural light into the house.
The theme of deliberate horizontal and vertical cuts continues, making positive and negative spaces that become the stair, the fireplace to a passage to the laundry.Materials inside and out were selected primarily for their capability to endure sustained exposure to the coastal environment.
